On episode 9 of The UK Surf Show we were fortunate enough to grab half an hour with Hugo Tagholm the C.E.O of Surfers Against Sewage.
Surfers Against Sewage are one of the UK’s leading marine conservation charities and they are on an incredible mission to put an end to the throwaway plastic which enters the world’s oceans at a rate of 12 million tonnes per year. Think about that number. 12 MILLION TONNES!
Even though we only had half an hour with Hugo Tagholm, he gave us so much that we’ve had to listen to it back twice already. Hugo’s passion and focused drive comes across clearly in the interview from the plastic pollution and holding the big companies responsible to the on the ground teams organising events and beach cleans. This was a serious one but, then again, we were talking about serious issues because if we, as surfers and ocean lovers, don’t look after and respect it, we could lose the one thing that makes it all possible.
Hugo Tagholm and the S.A.S team are responsible for the introduction of the 5p charge on single use bags and this alone has stopped 6 million plastic bags from entering the oceans. We discuss this and Hugo explains the next mission is to put an end to throwaway every day packaging such as the bottles used for water, cosmetics and cleaning products etc by making refilling a more widespread option.
We were blown away to listen to how dedication can make a hope into a reality and have been inspired to do more.
