Surf Trips and Good Friends

On this episode, we sit down with our good friend, Spoons, who has been on plenty of surf trips with us over the past 20 odd years, we discuss how a great surf trip isn’t always just about the surfing.

Is there anything better than surfing with good friends?

We talk about a number of surf trips we’ve been on over the years and the  plenty of misadventures along the way, from trying to paddle out in surf far too big for any of our abilities at the time to some dodgy tattoos and piercings to nasty B&Bs and night clubs and drinking far to much.

Stories about surfing when its so cold it makes you sick especially if you have to wrong equipment and zero experience.

We laugh a lot in this episode and reminisce about good times spent with good friends laughing and joking around, being young and carefree to the more recent and more responsible surf trips.

If you’ve ever been on a surf trip with your mates or it’s something you long to do, this is the episode for you.

Don’t forget ya arms, Spoons

One of our favourite stories in this episode is from a surf trip to Newquay in the early 2000’s where we went out in surf far to big for us with the wrong equipment, namely Spoons’ wetsuit.

We had hired Surfboards and wetsuits from a local shop ( but spoons had his own wetsuit one of the highlights of our surfing trips ) and ended up going to Fistral as it was going to be bigger, this alone should tell you how inexperienced we were at the time.

The conditions were so ridiculous or as Spoons describes it ” I just remember being stood on the beach looking out and it being 6ft of white water for about a hundred meters out”

Maybe if we had taken our (NOW) own advice and had a surf lesson when we first started surfing we wouldn’t have even attempted going out in surf that big and wind that strong, but we were young carefree and very very inexperienced.

Needless to say the surfing on this trip wasn’t the most successful, come to think of it that was a recurring theme in the early days.

It’s all about the stories

Remembering some of the most doggy B&B’s in Cornwall ( because they were cheap, thanks Leighton) where Leighton’s room had a window that wouldn’t shut properly in January, to the place with all the cats where the guy at the door who let us in and took our money wasn’t in any of the family photos on the wall! Lucky we’re still here at all.

That said in our late teens early twenties it wasn’t about where we were staying it was more about who we were with, how good the surf was and how cheap it all was.

Nights out

We then move on to some of the stories of the nights out we had along the way and many of them spent with our good friend Chris who’s stories alone could fill a book.

Things that were said in crowded night clubs to skinny dipping and Chris running back up the beach naked thinking we had stolen his clothes not realizing the tide had come in.

And Then to finding the ultimate summer solstice rave on a beach in Woolacombe that was like a scene from the movie Blue Juice.

Surf Trips it’s still the same ,but its not!

Then on to our more recent trips where we didn’t party as much stayed in a nicer place but the joy level was just the same or maybe even better.

In the end we think the best time you are ever gonna have on a surfing trip is the times you spend with the best of friends.
