On episode 28 of The UK Surf Show we chat to the one and only Matt Adler who played Rick Kane in our favourite surf film ever made, North Shore!
Matt talks about everything North Shore with us from how he got the part to his first sit down with writer Randal Kleiser and being sat round a table with Gerry Lopez , Ken Bradshaw and Mark Foo having his 20 year old mind blown.
“I had posters of these guys on my wall!” says Matt as he relives this moment.
How Matt dealt with the reaction
Matt goes on to tell us his feelings and initial reaction to the movie at such a young age and not being able to deal with the comments and reaction from the surf community.
He tells us it took him a long time to realise that it wasn’t a personal attack at him and that people just wanted to talk about it and things like “How is it that Rick Kane takes off on a right but comes out on a left?”
Was it all worth it?
Matt goes on to tell us about how it took him many years to understand it and used to ask his wife when people would come up to him and want to talk about North Shore “Why do people love it so much?” and she would tell him it was because of the characters and their innocence.
He now sees how much love there is surrounding North Shore and really understands why people love it so much “It’s a family friendly feel good film.”
Friends for Life
We then move on to John Philbin (Turtle) and how they are still best friends and that the magic of them becoming friends on screen was actually them becoming friends in real life.
We get to hear about how John And Matt have now been surfing all over the world together and still surf together now.
We don’t know about you but we are pretty sure we would lose our minds if we were stood on a beach or sat in a line up and look across and see Rick Kane and Turtle!!!
Although Matt says they don’t ever do it just to mess with people were not sure we believe him a hundred percent.
Why Matt took a break from surfing
We asked Matt why he took such a long break from surfing for nearly 20 years and he tells us how life and family happened and he found other things to fill his time but now he’s back loving it and surfing better than ever.
