On this episode of The UK Surf Show, we chat to Will and Liam from The Mindful Surfer Podcast in the first episode of our 3 part series; Mind, Body and Fuel
When we decided to do a 3 part series on Mind, Body and Fuel, we thought who better to kick it off with than The Mindful Surfer Podcast who started their podcast around the same time as we started ours.
We popped down to Sidmouth on the south coast of the UK on a gorgeous June evening to sit down on the beach to record a chat with Will and Liam, the hosts of The Mindful Surfer Podcast.
The setting couldn’t have been more idyllic for the conversation that proceeded, sat on the beach with the sun setting and the sound of the waves lapping the shore line to chat Mindfulness and life with 2 genuinely nice chaps.
Although the conversation flowed freely, it is a lot more difficult than you may think to ask questions about mindfulness without it a) sounding like a statement or b) asking questions like ‘How do I become mindful?’ or ‘Will mindfulness make me happy?’
That said, the guys did an amazing job answering the questions we did have and and letting everyone know what sort of thing you would get out of listing to their podcast (as well as ours obviously!)
The Mindful Surfer
Mindfulness is a huge business now with so many different groups and people trying to put their own spin on it but the thing we like about The Mindful Surfer Podcast is that, as surfers, they know that a lot of us have already felt that feeling of being completely in the moment, sliding down the face of that green wave as everything else falls away and you are completely at one with yourself and nature, when nothing else matters and you are just in the moment reacting to the changes and the things happening in the here and now.
The trick is trying to take that feeling back on to the land with you.
As Will says “it’s all about bringing it back to the breath” and Liam tells us of a Gerry Lopez quote of how surfing is like a backdoor or cheat code to mindfulness and meditation.
The thing we really liked about our chat with Will and Liam is that they don’t claim to know or have all the answers but it’s more about coming on their journey with them as they try to discover them along the way.
A pair of great guys who have a great love for surfing, self improvement and each other.
Here is the Alan Watts video that we mention at the beginning of the podcast
