On episode 31 of The UK Surf Show, we chat to Mr Northcore himself, Matt Strathern, Founder and CEO of Northcore.
Matt tells us how he started Northcore from the idea of a Key Pod that came from him thinking ‘There’s got to be something better out there to do than hiding your keys under the car when you go surfing’ and the Key Pod was born.
He explains the process of this idea turning into a real product, the first of which were sold by Matt wandering around Saunton car park trying to sell them to anyone who was interested.
Matt Strathern: Surfer First
Matt Talks about how he started surfing on a trip to California and fell in love with it immediately and thought ‘What on Earth have I been missing?’ Once he got back to the UK, he borrowed a board and windsurfing wetsuit from a friend’s dad and a jumper and started surfing in the North Sea, IN NOVEMBER!
Matt tells us about some of his favourite places to surf in the world and, like a lot of guests, chose his home break first of all and then a list of other breaks all around the world including jet skis and tow surfing in Ireland to the big waves of Mullaghmore and making friends for life.
The Northcore Family
The way Matt talks about Northcore and all the crew over there has the same feel as someone talking about their family, and that’s exactly what we’ve found in all our dealings with them from the boss man to the office staff like Darcy and Meg and even the team riders we’ve spoken to like Peter Conroy and Sandy Kerr. It all feels like one big family and that’s why we love them. Oh, and their products are fricking excellent!
The thing we found most inspiring about chatting to Matt was the passion and love he has for his Northcore family and surfing.
